COVID-19 | Travel with Confidence

As travel restrictions ease and we welcome back more flights to Cairns, our priority is making sure everyone has a safe and memorable experience when travelling through Cairns Airport. 

We’ve been working alongside other Australian Airports and airlines to ensure a consistent approach is taken and all practical COVID-19 health measures are in place, so that no matter where you travel within Australia to you can travel with confidence.

To keep it simple:

  • Leave Space, Stay Safe
  • Please wear a face mask
  • Good hygiene is in your hands
  • Go contactless where possible (book online, check-in online and self-service)
  • If you’re unwell, please don’t come to the airport – stay home.
  • Keep up to date with the latest travel advice and information via our Cairns Airport Facebook Page.
  • If you are arriving from overseas, please visit the Department of Home Affairs website.

Queensland Mandatory Face Mask Direction 

From 12.01am 12 January 2021, the new Mandatory Face Masks Direction came into effect.

 This new Direction introduces the following requirements:

  • Face masks are to be worn at all times throughout Queensland airports, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Face masks are to be worn on domestic commercial flights in Queensland, including when the aircraft is landing at or taking off from a Queensland airport.
  • Face masks are to be worn while an aircraft is in Queensland airspace.
  • Transport drivers driving passengers to and from quarantine hotels to wear a mask while transporting passengers.
  • People who have been directed to quarantine are to wear a face mask from the time they leave the airport until they arrive at their allocated room at a quarantine hotel.
  • Face masks will not be mandatory for children under the age of 12, for persons with a particular medical condition or disability, or if it is not safe to do so.

Queensland Border Declaration Pass

Border Restrictions Direction 18 commenced on 1am 1 December 2020, which requires a person entering Queensland who in the last 14 days has either been in a COVID-19 hotspot or been overseas to apply for and receive a Queensland Border Declaration Pass.

Before you fly

The health and safety of our airport community, employees and travellers is paramount. If you’re feeling unwell, please stay home.

If you do need to make changes to your travel plans, we recommend you contact your airline. The airlines have implemented a range of key measures within Australian Domestic Airports to limit the contact you may have with others as you check-in and proceed to your departure gate. See below:

Car Park

We encourage travellers to pre-book their Cairns Airport Parking online before arriving. By pre-booking online early you can also save up to 40%. Alternatively, credit card payments are also available at entry and exit points. If you have pre-booked online, simply tap your credit card at entry and again at exit when you’re leaving.

High touch surfaces in the car parks are also being frequently cleaned including the car park kiosk, trolleys and entry/exit stations.

We encourage travellers to use contactless check-in options (where possible) and to download your boarding pass from the airline website or app prior to arrival at Cairns Airport. If you have luggage to check-in, we also recommend you print baggage tag labels at the airline check-in kiosks (if available) to limit interaction and additional handling.

You can also expect the following:

  • Regular cleaning of common touchpoints such as check-in desks and kiosks.

  • Hand sanitisation stations are located at each entry/exit door for travellers to use at their leisure.

  • Social Distancing floor markers and signage is in place throughout the check-in area to remind travellers to maintain their social distance from fellow travellers where possible.

  • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) vending machines are available outside and inside the check-in area to enable travellers to purchase any personal protective wear such as face masks, gloves and hand sanitiser. Please check with your airline prior to arrival if you are required to purchase any protective wear. 


Regulated security measures remain unchanged, however you can expect the following hygiene measures to be in place:

  • All security staff will be equipped with PPE including gloves and face shields.

  • Security personnel will also maintain their distance where possible.

  • Regular cleaning of security trays and security equipment.

  • Social distancing signage and markers are visible in the queuing area prior to entering the security check-point.

  • Upon completion of your security check, a complimentary hand-washing station is available for travellers who wish to wash their hands with soap and water. Hand sanitiser dispensers are also available in the area.

Departures Lounge

Shopping & Dining

Cairns Airport is working closely with all our retail partners to ensure appropriate hygiene and social distancing measures are in place. Cairns Airport has also developed guidelines to ‘Keeping your workplace safe, clean & healthy’ to ensure a consistent approach across all retailers, some of these measures include:

  • Limiting numbers in retail stores & food and beverage outlets

  • Queue management is in place (where possible) to assist with entry/exit flow

  • Social distancing floor markers and signage

  • PPE has been made available and is also mandatory in Food & Beverage outlets where food is being prepped, cooked and served.

  • Regular cleaning of high touch surfaces

  • Contactless payment is preferred

  • Hand sanitiser is also available at Point of Sale and within stores.

Please note: Due to the impacts of COVID-19, some retailers are operating on reduced hours.


We’ve installed a number of seating options and alternative seating arrangements to provide passengers with the comfort of being able to socially distance from others. These are provided at all gates and key spaces within the departures lounge.

Cleaning & Hygiene

  • Increased cleaning measures throughout the departures lounge can be expected to maintain a clean and safe environment for everyone. Bathroom facilities have increased cleaning rotations, with particular focus on high touch point areas (door handles, taps, etc).

  • Additional hand sanitisation stations are readily available throughout key locations.

We will also provide regular messages to travellers via extensive signage, public address system and flight information display screens on recommended hygiene and social distancing practices.

Departure Gates

In our gate areas, social distancing measures are in place for boarding. Hand sanitisation stations are also readily available at boarding gates.

Our airlines partners will advise on their boarding process prior to the commencement of boarding. Social distancing measures for boarding and disembarkation have also been implemented by airlines.

We also encourage social distancing to be maintained in the gate seating areas. If you’re travelling with family or your loved ones, you can sit together but please observe your distance from others.

Boarding gate seating is also regularly cleaned.

Arrivals and Baggage Claim

We are spacing out the use of baggage carousels where possible. Social distancing floor markers and digital signage is in place in the arrivals hall and around the baggage claim area to encourage travellers maintain their social distance.

Where possible we ask that only one family member wait for their baggage and encourage other members to stand back whilst waiting for the baggage to be collected. This will limit the number of people waiting around the baggage carousel.

Hand sanitisation stations will also be available in key locations upon arrival at Cairns Airport through to the Baggage Claim area.

Transport (Bus, Taxis, Ride-Share & Car Rentals)

You can also expect the following measures when travelling with shuttle bus, taxi and ride share operators:

  • Use of alcoholic wipes or disinfectant to clean all hard surfaces at the beginning and end of a shift, or after any trip. This includes door handles, payment terminals, seats, seat belt and dashboard.

  • Hand sanitiser is available for customers to use at their leisure.

If you’re hiring a car, you can expect the following:

  • Pre-book your car hire online before you arrive to limit interaction on the day. For information on car rentals, click here.

  • All vehicles are cleaned before every rental, paying special attention to high touch point surfaces such as the steering wheel, indicators, dashboard, entertainment controls, door handles, both inside and out.

  • Increased flexibility on all bookings – you can change or cancel, without fees up to 24 hours before the start of your rental.
